The Challenge

More than ever, well-trained and compassionate priests are needed.

We need priests with a deep spiritual and intellectual life, capable of facing the challenges of today’s society and being a sign of God’s love in the world, supporting people in their search for a better life.

Over the centuries, priests moved by the love of God have contributed to the creation of thousands of hospitals, social works, schools, universities, and cultural institutions. They are the promoters of integral humanism, dialogue between cultures, and a search for peace and solidarity.

Unfortunately, many seminarists with a vocation and great potential to become agents of change in their communities cannot finance their education.

So that we, our children and grandchildren, miss out on the opportunity to see our communities and lives change]ing for the better.

Together we can overcome this challenge.

The world needs excellent spiritual leaders.

“It is necessary to prepare priests to be able to shed Christian light on the human difficulties of today.”
St. John Paul II

The solution

Providing outstanding education for priests is the most hopeful response to the world’s spiritual and human needs in the future.

In 1984, Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, with the blessing of St. John Paul II, fulfilled St. Josemaría Escrivá’s wish to create a center of excellence in pastoral studies in Rome, the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce.

The mission of this University is to respond to the complex challenges of today’s world, preparing people of faith who can dialogue with modernity and spread the light of Christ. It aims to transform students into protagonists of their communities’ human, social and intellectual development.

This solution requires an ongoing effort to create a Fund to finance scholarship programs and other academic activities over time, protecting students from economic instabilities.

With this in mind, in 2012, the Endowment Fund of the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce was born to support the integral education of priests and seminarians on the five continents.

Testimonials from sponsors of perpetual scholarships

“The Pontificia Università della Santa Croce provides a solid philosophical and theological education, very enriching for the multiple daily demands of priestly ministry.”

Dr. Thomas Widmer
Chaplain of the Swiss Guard 2013-2021, Rome.

“Being able to invest in the Perpetual Scholarship brings great joy to our family. Helping the Pontificia Universita della Santa Croce is a concrete way to support the Church worldwide and be grateful for all we have received. So far, we have had three scholarship recipients, a priest from Brazil, another from Sri Lanka and now a seminarian from Croatia. We have had a wonderfully personal and spiritual relationship with all of them.”

“After returning to Brazil, I work in my parish (Natal), preaching the Gospel and giving the sacraments to the whole community. Thanks to my donors, I became a priest, and now I can preach the Good News to the world. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for making this possible.”

Father Sérgio Alexandre da Silva
Alumni of the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce, currently in the Archdiocese of Natal – Rio Grande do Norte – Brazil.

Each priest impacts thousands of lives and causes a multiplier effect of solidarity in society.

There are many ways to support and extend this impact by investing in the Fund. The return on invested capital covers the annual study and living expenses in Rome and other academic initiatives.

It is not just a contribution but an investment in society, spiritual transformation, and the development of human values.

The families who invest in this project have a very close and familiar relationship with their beneficiaries, who transform communities, countries, and societies for a better world.
